For those of you who don’t know….Joseph Campbell studied the mythologies of the world and came up with a story structure that he believed all great heroic myths follow. He called it the Hero’s Journey or Monomyth. It was popularized by George Lucas when he followed the steps for the first Star Wars movies and it was also modified by Christopher Vogler for application in screenwriting.
The obvious place to look for a monomyth structure in LOST would be in Jack’s journey. But I also took a look at Locke’s journey because it was interesting in how his story followed the monomyth closely but he didn’t know that he was manipulated in the latter parts of what he believed to be his ‘heroic journey’.
Here’s a series of videos I made showcasing the themes composed by Michael Giacchino for the characters in the show.
I made the first video two years ago before the premiere of Season 5.
Second video was made after the Season 5 finale.
The third (and probably the final) video was made after Season 6
I uploaded the first Lost Character theme video in January last year because I couldn’t find anyone who had done a compilation of it (at least not that I know of). A n00b in video editing, I just made a slideshow added with music with Windows Movie Maker (which I still do LOL). Anyway, since then I’ve come across more videos dedicated to Michael Giacchino’s amazing score from this show…most probably because the show was coming to an end and we all felt more reflective. I think this will be the last character theme video which is why it seemed appropriate to end it with the theme of the survivors of Oceanic 815. Despite all the Polar Bears, Smoke Monsters, electromagnetism…LOST is essentially a human story about the survivors of Oceanic 815 🙂
